Ashlands County DA McKnight says he's concerned that the escalating opioid crisis in his county is undermining the state's reputation as a safe haven for drug users and dealers.

While a functioning Internet connection makes legal practice a highly mobile concept, there is certainly no need to relocate legal practice to Greater Wisconsin. The Wisconsin State Bar Association may address the need for the state to invest in wireless infrastructure, which is increasingly critical to economic growth. Last spring, Birdsall and other state attorneys asked that the rate of court-appointed attorneys be increased to a level that would still be low compared with other states. One of these steps could help reduce the backlog in our state immediately by increasing the number of court-appointed lawyers, Birdsall argues, but it would also significantly increase costs. Will, who is representing WILL in the case, and Jensen argue that the state's goal should be to keep deferring decisions out of the hands of federal courts.
WACDL sponsors two to three criminal law seminars a year, including one that focuses exclusively on ethical issues underlying criminal defense practices. Opponents include the Wisconsin Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, a group of law firms formed to fight WILL's legal activism.
